Earlier this year, the Antarctic Place‑names Committee met to review a suite of applications, resulting in 20 new additions to the British Antarctic Territory and South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands gazetteers. The APC website has a useful web-map to help explore these new names in more detail.
Several of the new names are concentrated around Signy Island. Dunn Cove, Adlard Point, Fox Point and Briggs Point are associated with British Antarctic Survey staff who have contributed to the establishment and maintenance of long‑running seabird and seal monitoring programmes.
Near the Larsen Ice Shelf, Cape Abrahamsen recognises Dr Einar Povl Abrahamsen, whose career made a substantial contribution to Southern Ocean oceanography and marine science. Around Adelaide Island, a new naming theme has been introduced, with features named in honour of scientists whose work has had global impact. Names such as Curie Cove, Franklin Peak and Anning Island are among the recent additions. Congratulations to all the nominees.
